Engraved perfume – The most personal gift | Da Meso

A perfume is beautiful — but a perfume with a personal engraving is unforgettable. Every time the recipient picks up the bottle, they will read your words. This idea is over 60,000 years old. And more relevant than ever.

Why a perfume with an engraving is the perfect gift

There are gifts you use. And gifts you keep. An engraved perfume belongs to both. It smells — and it tells a story. Your story.

Whether for a birthday, wedding, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, or simply as a sign of appreciation — a perfume with a personal engraving turns a high-quality product into a true one-of-a-kind piece. No other item in the world will bear exactly your words.

When was engraving invented? The history

Engraving is one of humanity’s oldest art forms — and at the same time, one of the most personal. Here is an overview of its fascinating development:

From approx. 60,000 BC
Prehistoric times — Humanity's first etchings

In the Diepkloof Rock Shelter in South Africa, scientists found hatched engravings on ostrich eggs. Humans etched symbols into weapons, containers, and tools — for marking ownership, as religious signs, and as the first form of communication.

3rd millennium BC
Bronze Age — Metal meets engraving

With bronze, the first ideal material for engraving emerged. In Mesopotamia and Egypt, seal stamps were engraved — they authenticated documents and secured political power. In the Iron Age, metal engraving reached its first peak.

Antiquity
Greece & Rome — Engraving as a status symbol

Weapons, jewelry, and gemstones were refined with fine engravings. Gemstone engraving (glyptics) was considered a high art. In Egypt, engraved hieroglyphs told history and religion — carved into stone for eternity.

1st century AD
Glass engraving — A new dimension

For the first time, glass was engraved — using a rotating wheel, mythological scenes were created on glass vessels. This technique spread rapidly in cities like Cologne and Rome, laying the foundation for later perfume bottles.

Middle Ages
Guilds & religious artworks

Goldsmiths, mint masters, and blacksmiths refined the art of engraving in European guilds. Ecclesiastical artifacts and everyday objects were enhanced with ornaments. The engraver became a respected craft profession.

Renaissance — 15th to 17th century
Albrecht Dürer & the copperplate engraving

Engraving became an independent art form. Albrecht Dürer created copperplate engravings of extraordinary detail — the engraver was no longer considered just a craftsman, but an artist. Intaglio printing revolutionized visual communication in Europe.

End of the 18th century
Machine engraving — Industry takes over

With industrialization, the machine made its entrance. Pantographs and mechanical engraving machines enabled faster production. Watches, cutlery, medals, and musical instruments were now engraved in large quantities.

20th century
Laser engraving — Precision at the highest level

With the laser, microscopically small details were created that would be impossible by hand. Luxury watches, jewelry, and soon perfume bottles could be personalized precisely, permanently, and affordably for everyone.

Today
Engraving as the most personal gesture

Modern laser technology makes individual engravings accessible to everyone. Personalized gifts with names, dates, or dedications are trendy — because people still have the need to leave behind something that lasts.

The technology has changed over 60,000 years — from stone to bronze, from hand to laser. But the basic principle has remained the same: An engraving makes an object unique. It connects a material value with a personal moment.

What text can I have engraved?

There are hardly any limits to your creativity. Here are the most popular ideas from our customers:

  • First names, initials, or abbreviations — e.g., "S & M" for a couple
  • Special dates — wedding anniversary, birthday, first joint vacation
  • Short sentences or quotes from a movie, song, or book
  • Loving dedications such as "For my best friend" or "Thank you, Mom"
  • Pet names, nicknames, or little insider messages
  • Motivational sayings or simply: "I love you"

Important: Please double-check your engraving text carefully before submitting — including capitalization, special characters, and spaces. Once production has begun, corrections are not possible.

Technology: How does Da Meso engrave?

At Da Meso, we use modern laser engraving — the most precise and durable method for permanently adding text to perfume bottles, glass items, and cosmetic products. The laser removes the material in a controlled manner without damaging the product. The result: a clean, high-contrast engraving that will not fade or flake off — forever.

What about round bottles?

For round, curved, or specially shaped bottles, the engraving is applied vertically, on the side, or at the most suitable location, based on expert assessment. This ensures that the result always looks professional and aesthetic.
